How did you hear about AFS?
I first saw the work being done on the old Bally’s building and then used the Google machine to find out more.
What/Who inspired you to take the first step toward getting in shape?
I actually recommended AFS to my husband first – without ever setting foot inside! He was looking for a personal trainer, and when I read about AFS online, I thought it might be a good fit at a price that wouldn’t break the bank. Thankfully my recommendation was a good one and he loved it. I saw all of the great things it was doing for him so I decided to give it a go and meet with Nate for a consultation and tour.
What initially intrigued you about our program/why did you sign up?
After two ACL tears and two subsequent surgeries, I had thrown in the softball towel (after playing for many years) and was really disheartened. I did discover running and yoga, but weirdly missed all of the lunges and strength exercises from my past physical therapy sessions. AFS was offering me lunges and more. I had no idea what TRX was – or if I’d be coordinated enough to not fall off those steps – but I wanted to get stronger and leaner so there was less stress on my knee, and AFS seemed like the place that could help.
How did you achieve the success you’ve seen thus far?
I love a good plan, so when Brooke told me what she was looking for me to do, I committed myself to it. At the start of each month, I add AFS classes to my planner and do my best to stick to that schedule – because I can’t erase pen! I’m also an avid food logger. I love that I’m able to eat whatever I want throughout the day, as long as I stay within my calorie goal. I don’t think I could ever cut out entire food groups – or would want to. And when I don’t meet my calorie or protein goal, I don’t beat myself up for it. I still turn it in and try again the next week. No one’s perfect, and Cadbury crème eggs are both addictive and delicious.
I also want to say THANK YOU to the entire AFS staff and to my husband, Mark. I feel incredibly supported, and it means the world to me.
What changes have you noticed in your life since starting with AFS?
My clothes don’t fit anymore! I distinctly remember walking into a store a couple months ago, and when the sales associate asked me what size jeans she could pull for me, I had to say, “You know, I’m honestly not sure anymore!” It was a big moment for me. And an even bigger moment happened shortly thereafter, when a size I hadn’t worn in over a decade fit again.
More importantly, I feel so much stronger. I still participate in all of the biking and running events that I did before AFS, but now I have more confidence, better times, a bigger smile on my face, and recover quicker. I used to be so focused on my knee, and I can’t explain what a relief it is to know my body’s stronger than it’s ever been to help support it and get me through whatever nutty thing I sign up for.
Advice you can offer others looking to make changes you’ve made?
Give AFS your best shot. When Brooke first slid that piece of paper over to me after my initial assessment and told me what we were going to accomplish together, I was nervous, excited, scared, and still a bit doubtful that I’d actually be able to do it. But it’s working! It’s really working! Put your faith in your practitioner, be honest with them, and work hard in class. Oh, and speaking of classes, if you’re ever paired up with me, I’m apologizing in advance for statements like, “We’re doing A’s here, right??” or “Yes! Abs!” See you around. 🙂
Thank YOU Kelly for being an awesome person! What you didn’t mention is how positive and encouraging you are in the classes toward your fellow clients, we love having you here!
