1. How did you hear about AFS?

I went online and was searching personal trainers in the Ann Arbor area. I came across AFS and noticed that there were a lot of positive reviews. When I had asked some of my coworkers if they had heard about it, some were actually former clients. They had nothing but positive things to say, so I figured I would give it a try.

2. What/Who inspired you to take the first step toward getting in shape?

I knew I had to get in shape. I would lose a little, then gain a little. I would lose, and then plateau. Last summer, I was volunteering at a summer camp for children with solid organ transplants. Seeing these kids who have gone through enormous medical hardships, running, rock-wall climbing, and ziplining, really opened my eyes. I realized that there were no excuses for me. Their tenacity was inspiring, and provided me with great motivation.

3. What initially intrigued you about our program/why did you sign up?

When I first came to AFS, I had doubted myself and didn’t think I could do it. But then I came back. I was intrigued by how personalized the program is. I liked the idea of having a personal trainer that could help me set calorie and exercise goals. I liked that I would be able to connect with them throughout my program for any questions, advice, or helpful hints. Also, the actual weight loss session classes were personalized. To allow people to do circuits at the level that they were able, while providing a series of progression, was something I had not seen before at other gyms. Lastly, when I visited, the energy and kindness of all of the staff members and trainers really showcased a positive environment that I wanted to be a part of.

4. How did you achieve the success you’ve seen thus far?

I really do have to credit a big part of my success to Sawyer. I was never the “gym” guy. I would workout, but never anything to the extent I do now. I “thought” I was eating rather healthy. I was definitely somebody who needed help. Sawyer has taken the time to really explain things to me. He has created a very realistic and personalized plan. Whether it is his weekly check-ins or creating workout plans for me while I am traveling for work, his support is very appreciated. All of the trainers have also helped my success. They have been so great and positive, while also challenging me. When they have corrected my form, or brought me slightly heavier weights or encouraged more reps, they have really shown me what I am capable of.

5. What changes have you noticed in your life since starting with AFS?

I have noticed a lot of changes after joining AFS. Naturally, you noticed the weight and inches that you lose. However, I noticed additional things with my health. I have asthma, and I started realizing that I was becoming less dependent on my inhaler. I started seeing that I could go faster and longer on treadmills or ellipticals, and wasn’t short of breath. I also play intramural sports, and noticed that I could run faster, hit harder, and have just become an overall better athlete. The most important change has been my confidence. when you have been overweight for a majority of your life, it can take a hit to your mentality. AFS has challenged me and allowed me to see what I am capable of doing. I no longer let things appear impossible, but instead, see everything as an opportunity. Whether it is improved health, being able to buy the clothes I want, or just feeling more respected on the sports field/court, I just feel like a new and improved person. That feeling is priceless.

6. Advice you can offer others looking to make changes you’ve made?

My advice is to not be intimidated and do not doubt yourself. I know that can be hard, because I was that way. AFS offers you all of the guidance and support that you need. I have been to gyms and programs where I felt judged by trainers and other clients. That has not been the case at AFS. Everyone is so supportive, and there really is a “team” mentality. Also, be honest and ask all of the necessary questions. Sometimes we can be too shy/embarrassed to ask questions about exercise or weight. However, the AFS trainers are pros, and can really provide you with a wealth of information, enhancing your ability to succeed.
