How did you hear about AFS?
The first time that I heard about AFS was from another member. She was talking to my wife about how much she liked the program. She was recommending it to my wife. I really didn’t get it. Then I ran into my neighbor (Nathan Senter) who had just started working at AFS. He described the program, the objectives and the scientific approach. I was intrigued enough to try it.
What/Who inspired you to take the first step toward getting in shape?
About 8yrs ago, we about to have our second child. I was working very hard. I was significantly overweight (~285-290lbs at my heaviest) all my life. I was not healthy. I decided that I would get in shape and lose weight for my family.
What initially intrigued you about our program/why did you sign up?
When I heard about AFS, I had already lost 70lbs through a combination of diet and a little exercise. However, I had hit a wall. I was feeling better but not great. I had been struggling to get into the habit of exercise. (Frankly, it never appealed to me early in life.) I had been wasting money on a traditional gym membership for years. I didn’t know how to efficiently workout. Any routine that I had tried was boring after a few times. I didn’t have the time to figure out a better way.
How did you achieve the success you’ve seen thus far?
For me, success has come from two places. It starts with an attitude; I strive to be happy but never satisfied. I spent years continually searching for ways to be healthier. I spent many years trying to push past my internal barriers and fears. My success came from never being satisfied with where I am. But I could not let fear and disappointment stop me. I find happiness and wellbeing in the pursuit. This attitude has allowed me to try things, and stay motivated even when I was not succeeding in my quest to be healthier.
What changes have you noticed in your life since starting with AFS?
I feel great! Physically, I have never been stronger and fitter. I have lost ~25lbs of fat mass and gained ~10lbs of lean mass! I used to have regular knee problems from old injuries; not anymore. I finally feel like I have more energy! I used to get tired quickly when doing yard work or projects around the house.
Advice you can offer others looking to make changes you’ve made?
My advice is “be happy but never satisfied”; set a goal; strive to find what works for you; and don’t let your preconceived notions about yourself stop you!
