1.) How did you hear about AFS?
A friend at work had been a member at AFS Ann Arbor for about a year and a half and always told me how much she enjoyed the program and atmosphere.
2.) What/Who inspired you to take the first step toward getting in shape?
For a few years I have always looked at myself and thought I needed to lose a few pounds and get in shape. It had been since high school that I really was doing regular physical activity. I would try to do things on my own and would last a week or 2 before falling back to old bad habits. I knew I needed a more structured program to keep me going.
3.) What initially intrigued you about our program/why did you sign up?
I was initially intrigued by how much my colleague enjoyed the Ann Arbor program and the changes I saw in her lifestyle from following through with the program. After my initial consultation I was further intrigued because it seemed different than any other program I had heard of before. AFS seemed to pride themselves on molding their program(s) to the goals of each individual and I thought it was a good structure for me. I knew I needed someone to hold me accountable for my workouts and eating habits.
4.) How did you achieve the success you’ve seen thus far?
I’ve achieved the success I’ve seen so far by really committing myself to following the program Chris has laid out for me. I knew the changes I wanted to see and trusted in the program and the advice Chris gave. I started seeing changes as quickly as 2 weeks after starting and knew that if I continued to be 100% committed to the program the results would come. I made sure I was as accurate as I could in describing my weekly workouts and food logs so Chris was able to provide me accurate advice for the following week.
5.) What changes have you noticed in your life since starting with AFS?
Overall, I just feel a lot better than I have in a long time, both mentally and physically. My daily energy level has greatly increased. Before I started with AFS I would always have a lag in energy around 3PM after lunch and would be exhausted by the time I got home from work. Since starting, I rarely feel that lack of energy after lunch and am much more motivated to do other things when I get home. I’ve realized the difference portion control can make in my diet. I think about the portion sizes I would eat before starting with AFS and couldn’t imagine eating the same thing now because I would be full before I could finish it.
6.) Advice you can offer others looking to make changes like you’ve made?
The biggest advice I can offer is to fully commit yourself to the program and the advice of your practitioner and the results will be there. It took me about 2 weeks to adjust to the lifestyle change and then it became my regular routine. I haven’t given up most foods that I love, even pizza or chocolate chip cookies, I’ve just learned to portion control and budget them into my diet. Be honest in your food and activity logs to allow the proper advice from your practitioner and you won’t be disappointed in what you see and how you feel!
Congrats James! Especially on still being able to eat pizza and cookies!
