Nutritionist, nutrition specialist, nutrition coach, dietitian, dietitian nutritionist, registered, licensed, all the titles… so what do they mean? And which do we want to work with?
While it seems confusing looking at all those titles (and maybe even more), it really is fairly simple.
Registered or Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (shortened to RDN or LDN) is what you want. But why?
Let’s compare.
Okay that’s great, but we all eat, so we all know what we should be doing… right? Here are some questions to consider.
Do you really need a Registered Dietitian? Some questions to ask yourself
Are you looking for basic nutrition knowledge? Are you young and healthy and just looking for the basics? If yes, then a nutritionist could fit the bill.
Or do you have some health concerns? Do you have specific health goals or even body composition goals that you’re working on? Or is your body changing and things aren’t working like they used to? Or maybe you’ve tried all the “plans” out there and nothing has really stuck.
Maybe you don’t want just another generic meal plan. Maybe you’re ready to work on changing your habits now. Creating a plan that feels sustainable so you can get to your goals and stay there.
My guess is that most of you fall into one of these categories. You’re looking for something more… personal.
So, consider the results you’re looking for… an RDN will make recommendations that are tailored to your health history and also take into account your past nutrition history and future health goals. They will create a plan for you (and WITH you) to help you move forward.
A dietitian will help you weed through all the nutrition information floating around social media. They will be someone that will offer evidence-based recommendations instead of generic ideas or the latest trends. They will provide education, support, accountability as well as resources to help you move forward and make decisions that align with your health story.
