I live and work close to AFS and drove by the Plymouth location many times. A few months prior to my start at AFS, a friend of mine started classes. I noticed his progress from Facebook posts and decided to give the place a shot!
I had felt really out of shape and lethargic for quite a while and knew I needed to do something to change my lifestyle. Starting in January, my work initiated a biggest loser competition. Initially, I wasn’t very interested but decided to take part as a way to “force” myself to do something. I knew the accountability from being in the competition would keep me disciplined especially since I don’t like to lose!
3) What initially intrigued you about our program/why did you sign up?I was a member at a number of gyms in the past 10 years and none had motivated me long-term to stay healthy. I knew I needed a personal trainer, but didn’t want to pay what it would cost. I found AFS to be the perfect combination of exercise with cost-effective accountability from my practitioner, Kate Shafer. I don’t know of anything else like AFS in the area!
Discipline, discipline, discipline! It was easier for me to abandon my former lifestyle to avoid temptation rather than gradually make changes. With the advice from Kate, I decreased my daily caloric intake and significantly increased my protein intake. The result was less room in my diet for unhealthy, high calorie foods. I knew that eating these would leave me without enough remaining calories and feeling hungry at the end of the day. Also, I completed 4 circuit training workouts each week – 3 at AFS and 1 at home. The AFS Weight Loss classes offer different exercise intensity levels at each station with tons of variety and I’ve tried the whole time to push myself to improve. Another trick was asking the practitioners to push me. Even though I don’t feel like it sometimes, having someone push me forces me to try harder. Kate was great at keeping me accountable with my food logs and pushing me to workout harder and eat healthier.
I’ve noticed that I have more energy for my family and for work. I’m better able to handle the stress at work – I take it out on the punching bags! I have a much better outlook on life in general.
Don’t wait! Do something now. Take the first step. The process will not be easy, but the reward in how you feel will be worth the effort! AFS might not be right for everyone, but find what works best for you.
Duane, you’re such a hard worker in class and your success shows it! Keep knockin’ it out! 😉
PS, Duane also WON that competition at work!
